The Man Behind the French Tip.
Los Angeles 1975
The founder of nail brand ORLY, Jeff Pink was asked by a Hollywood studio to create a nail look that worked with every costume. Jeff remembered seeing women using white pencils under their nails for a clean look. So he thought, why not paint the white on top. His solution was simple: a nude or pale pink base with a sharp white tip. It looked polished, natural on camera, and didn’t clash with any outfit.
Paris Fashion Week 1976
At first, he called it the “Natural Nail Look.” But when he introduced it at Paris Fashion Week, it took off among designers and models. To capitalise on the buzz, he renamed it the French Manicure.
Around the world 1980
By the 1980s, the French tip was everywhere, from editorial shoots to suburban salons. It became the go-to for brides, professionals, and anyone wanting something timeless.
