Most allergy risk comes down to how carefully products are handled, cured and cleaned. This module covers uncured gel, HEMA, contact dermatitis, lamp safety and chemical overexposure.
Be picky with your sticky.
Uncured gel must not stay on the skin.
This is the number one most important step.
Alcohol only removes the sticky feeling from the dispersion layer.
Gel cleanser is designed to remove uncured gel, reducing the chance of allergies.
Uncured gel products should never remain on cuticles or skin.
Cleansers neutralise reactants found in uncured gel.
Let's talk about HEMA.
What is it?
Hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) is a monomer used in nail products, usually for adhesion and dilution.
Some nail products contain HEMA, and when used properly and in low levels, it is not harmful.
HEMA allergies
Anyone who develops an allergy is strongly recommended to have a dermatological test to determine which ingredients they are allergic to.
These ingredients must then be avoided for life, and their dentist and orthopaedic consultant should be notified.
Allergies are possible with all gel and acrylic systems and are not only related to HEMA.
Repeated exposure can become a real problem.
What it can look like
The rash is not contagious or life-threatening, but it can be very uncomfortable.
Signs and symptoms include:
- Red rash or bumps
- Itching, which may be severe
- Dry, cracked or scaly skin
- Blisters, draining fluid or crusting
- Swelling, burning or tenderness
Where it often appears
Contact dermatitis due to improper use of nail products usually appears on the:
- Tips of wiping fingers
- Wrists
- Forearms
- Where the brush rests during application
It has also been known to occur on the face or neck when solvents bind to dust particles and become airborne.
Contact dermatitis isn't only caused by uncured gel.
Under-cured gel
Under-cured gel due to lamps that do not use the correct nanometers or are old can also cause issues.
The gel may look and feel cured but is not fully cured. Dust created during filing can then land on the skin and cause allergic reactions.
Lamp rule
UV lamps cure all gels. LED lamps only cure LED-specific gels.
You are responsible for client safety.
Know how exposure happens.
Exposure through skin contact with salon chemicals, contaminated surfaces, dust or uncured product.
Exposure that occurs when chemicals are transferred to the mouth, including through contaminated hands or surfaces.
Exposure from breathing in vapours, dust or airborne particles in the salon environment.
Small exposure, repeated often, can add up.
Watch for changes.
- Skin irritation
- Mild headaches
- Watery or itchy eyes
Often the first warning.
If exposure continues, irritation can progress into:
- Rash
- Blisters
- Open sores
Permanent allergies.
Repeated overexposure can lead to permanent allergies, meaning the body will no longer tolerate the substance at any level.
Build prevention into your habits.
Wash hands between every client.
Do not reuse wipes.
Use proper cleanser for tools and brushes.
Avoid direct contact with contaminated brush hairs.
Avoid resting wrists on contaminated surfaces.
Use the correct curing lamp for the system.
Use gloves or barrier protection where appropriate.
Clean desks, brushes, lamps and other contaminated surfaces properly.
